Things to do in Terra Nova National Park

Published on 3 December 2024 at 21:59

We had the opportunity to visit Terra Nova National Park for 3 days while driving around Newfoundland last September.  This beautiful Boreal forest is a treat to the eye.  We spend 3 days in this part of the provinces and could have spend just a few more.

On the rainy day with took the chance take things slow and check out the Visitor Center. It was full of educational information. They had a wonderful gift shop full of souvenir. It was a great rainy day activity.

Camping

Camping is a great way to get in touch with nature while in Terra Nova Park. With 2 campground and several backcountry camping spot you are sure to get a great taste of what Newfoundland is all about. You can bring your tent, RV or they even have oTENTik's available to you.

We did the camping in the oTENTiks located at Newman Sound campground. The campground was centred in the park. We where well greeted by the lady working at the check in. She was very helpful with directions and things to do inside the park.  We did get a little anxious when she keep repeating that our oTENTik was not bear proof, good thing we had brought with us bear spray and a bear bell, you could say we came prepared. Our campsite had a great big BBQ to cook our meals. It was also located very close to the washrooms and shower which was great.

Hiking

With over 80 kilometers of trails, Terra Nova is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream! Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a short stroll, there’s a trail for every fitness level. Each one offers its own unique perspective, from quick jaunts to multi-day adventures—Terra Nova has something for everyone.

Although we didn’t hike as much as we’d hoped (thanks, Mother Nature, for the rain!), we still managed to tackle five amazing trails.

Our standout favorite? The Mill Cove Lookout Trail. It’s packed with fun facts as you ascend, and the reward at the top is a breathtaking view. Most of the trails we explored were fairly easy, with the exception of Louil Hill Trail. It comes with a challenging set of stairs—though they’re optional, they lead to a stunning panoramic view that’s definitely worth the climb!

Fees

There is an entrance fee to access the park. Daily passes at Parks Canada vary by location; for Terra Nova, the cost of a day pass is $6.50.  There is also extra fees possible if extra activities are in your plans like camping, fishing, ect.. it is always a good idea to plan ahead so there are not surprise fee apond arrival. If multiple locations are in your plans there is also the option of buying a  Discovery pass. With this pass you are admissible to over 80 Park Canada locations in Canada for a full year.

We opted for a Discovery Pass, which is valid for one year and covers vehicle entry, rather than being issued per person. Given that we were visiting several Parks Canada locations, the pass was a cost-effective choice for us.
