Newfoundland is the kind of place that steals your heart without asking for permission. With its dramatic landscapes, colorful towns, and quirky locals, it’s like stepping into a living, breathing postcard—except way more fun and a little bit unpredictable! From the charming row houses of St. John's to the stunning coastal cliffs, you’ll be constantly wowed by the scenery. And let's not forget the wildlife—moose casually strolling by, puffins putting on a show, and the occasional rainstorm that somehow just adds to the charm. The food scene? Let’s just say where else can you try cod tongues, freshly caught seafood, and enjoy a local brew all in one meal? Newfoundland is an adventure, a bit of a wild ride, and a place full of heart—you’ll leave with unforgettable memories and a whole new appreciation for this incredible island!
In September 2024, we set out on the road trip of a lifetime to Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost province. Neither of us had been there before, and we were eager to find a destination where we could bring our dog, Dixie. A quick search for "most pet-friendly places" led us straight to Newfoundland, so we began planning our adventure five months in advance. Our main goal was to drive the Trans-Canada Highway from east to west, with a few detours to explore some small towns along the way.
While Newfoundland's summer months are typically bustling with tourists, by September, things are a bit quieter—though still lively, according to the locals. We met fellow travelers from the Northwest Territories and saw many vehicles with U.S. license plates. However, many small businesses close for the winter due to fewer visitors, particularly in the smaller towns, so dining options were sometimes limited during our visit.
How to get there
Getting to Newfoundland is an adventure in itself—your options are either by ferry or air. With four small airports scattered around the province, flying is an option, but since we were traveling with our dog, that wasn’t really feasible for us. Instead, we took the ferry with Marine Atlantic. There are two points of entry by ferry: Port-aux-Basques and Argentia, with the latter only available during the summer months. Luckily, our travel dates aligned with the summer schedule, so we were able to board the 16-hour ferry from North Sydney, NS to Argentia, NL.
We were excited to sail aboard the brand-new Ala'suinu, which had just started service with Marine Atlantic in July 2024. The ship was spacious, modern, and beautiful—perfect for our long journey. Marine Atlantic has a pet-friendly policy in place to ensure safe and comfortable travel for both passengers and their furry companions. We booked one of their pet-friendly cabins, which were a bit snug but ideal for keeping Dixie close and comfortable during the crossing. She seemed to enjoy the trip as much as we did, with minimal stress.
Our sailing was a night-time voyage, departing at 5 PM Atlantic Time. We arrived two hours early to secure our cabin reservation and were guided by the friendly staff to our lane, ready to start our Newfoundland adventure!
The Capital : St John's
Our adventure started in St. John's, Newfoundland, is a vibrant and charming city that perfectly blends old-world charm with modern energy. As the easternmost city in North America, it's packed with history, culture, and a spirit that's as lively as the Atlantic Ocean that hugs its shores. From the colorful row houses of Jellybean Row to the stunning views from Signal Hill, St. John's is a place that invites exploration at every turn.
Wander through the narrow streets of downtown, where you'll find a mix of cozy cafes, lively pubs, and unique boutiques. The local art scene is thriving, and you’ll often stumble upon galleries showcasing everything from traditional Newfoundland art to contemporary works. History buffs will love the iconic Signal Hill and The Rooms, which offer a deep dive into the city’s rich maritime past.
St. John's is also known for its welcoming locals, who are as warm and friendly as the city's inviting atmosphere. Whether you're there for the food (get ready for fresh seafood and the best chowder you've ever tasted), the outdoors (take a hike along the East Coast Trail), or simply to soak in the scenery, St. John's is a place that makes you feel right at home.
It’s a city that’s bold, colorful, and always full of surprises—definitely worth a spot on your travel list!

Whether you’re exploring by foot, boat, or just enjoying the peace and quiet, Terra Nova National Park is an ideal destination to escape into the wild beauty of Canada's easternmost province.
During our time in Terra Nova, we immersed ourselves in the beauty of nature, hiking and discovering all its hidden treasures. While we had one rainy day, our cozy oTENTik kept us dry and warm through the night—perfect for the weather! We didn’t let the rain slow us down; instead, we took the opportunity to explore nearby towns, enjoying the scenic drive and the charm of the area, rain or shine.

With its picturesque harbor, colorful fishing boats, and stunning ocean views, Burlington feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy peaceful walks along the shoreline, savor a freshly caught seafood meal, or simply relax in the tranquility of nature. We took it easy and enjoyed a peaceful night, topped off by the most breathtaking sunset—truly a must-see experience!
Gros Morne National Park
Gros Morne National Park is like nature's ultimate show-off—and we mean that in the best way possible. With its dramatic cliffs, pristine lakes, and towering mountains, it’s as if Mother Nature herself took one look at the world and decided, "Yeah, let’s make this place a UNESCO World Heritage site!" From hiking up the iconic Gros Morne Mountain (a bit of a leg workout, but totally worth it) to cruising along the stunning Western Brook Pond fjord, this park has it all. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie or just someone who likes to breathe in fresh mountain air while staring at jaw-dropping views, Gros Morne has your back. So pack your hiking boots, bring your camera (you'll need it), and get ready to be wowed. It’s a place where the only thing more spectacular than the scenery is the "wow" you'll keep saying every five minutes.
We kicked off our Gros Morne adventure by heading north of the park and settling into Shallow Bay Campground, where we stayed in cozy wooden cabins provided by Parks Canada. These cabins were a perfect choice for late September camping, offering a little extra warmth when the temperatures dropped. We spent two nights here, exploring the area and making plenty of stops to take in the park’s stunning beauty. Afterward, we headed south and spent three more nights in Lomond, where the view was nothing short of spectacular. Our cabin there faced Killdevil Mountain, offering breathtaking sights right from our doorstep.
During our time in Gros Morne, we hiked, explored the charming local towns, and simply soaked in the natural beauty all around us. As a bonus, we even spotted moose and caribou up close—definitely a bucket list moment! From the scenic views to the wildlife encounters, every part of this experience was unforgettable.
Port-aux-Basque
Port-aux-Basques is a key exit point on the southwestern coast of Newfoundland, acting as one of the island’s main ferry terminals. This picturesque town offers visitors a stunning view of the rugged coastline as they depart or arrive by sea. Known for its rich maritime heritage, Port-aux-Basques provides a quiet, scenic escape with charming local shops, cozy eateries, and scenic trails. Whether you're wrapping up your Newfoundland journey or just starting your adventure, this coastal town offers a peaceful and memorable transition in or out of the island
September, being right in the heart of hurricane season, wasn’t going to let us leave Newfoundland without giving us a taste of its power. Unfortunately, we got a bit of the stormy weather on our ferry ride back. To say the ride was "bumpy" would be an understatement! Thankfully, we had our pet-friendly cabin to make the journey a little more comfortable for both us and Dixie. After the crossing, we were more than ready to set foot on solid ground! Though sailing through stormy weather is a possibility when traveling by sea, Marine Atlantic takes every precaution to ensure that all crossings are safe and secure before departure.
Final thoughts of Newfoundland
Our time exploring Newfoundland was truly unforgettable! From the breathtaking landscapes to the unforgettable moments shared as a couple (and with Dixie), this incredible province has left a lasting impression on us. Newfoundland will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we’ll cherish the memories we’ve made here for years to come.

Whether you're hiking through dramatic landscapes, exploring colorful coastal towns, or simply enjoying the warmth and hospitality of the locals, this island has something for everyone.
